PROGRAM
TOUR OUTLINE:
Day 1. Sunday, May
30, 2004���������Overnight Flight
Departure from the United
States under own r/t air arrangements (UOA)
Day 2. Monday, May 31, 2004�������������..Milan
Arrive in Milan and meet the
ASIS Tour Manager at the first hotel accommodation. Today is free to acquaint
yourself with the city. Milan is the dynamic fashion capital of Italy. A city
that all Europe looks to for creative inspiration.
Day 3. Tuesday, June 1, 2004��������������Milan
Today there will be
a brief orientation at the hotel and then enjoy Milan city sightseeing with a
local guide. In the evening, enjoy
dinner together!
Day 4. Wednesday,
June 2, 2004������������..Como
This morning we depart Milan
and travel by bus to Como, the center of Italian textile printing. Here we visit the RATTI Textile Museum and
Educational Foundation.
Day 5. Thursday, June 3, 2004�������������..Como
We visit the CLERECI TESSUTO
design studio, print mill and showroom. We will also visit the BOSSI
screen-engraving studio. In the evening
we will enjoy a boat ride on beautiful Lake Como where charming villas and
gardens line the banks.
Day 6. Friday, June 4, 2004��..������������.Como
We enjoy a day trip to Isola
Bella. Built during the 16th
C by the Borromeo family this extraordinary villa and garden encompasses an
entire island in Lake Maggiore.
Day 7. Saturday, June 5, 2004�.������������.Venice
Depart Como this morning to
visit the Ducal Palace in Mantua, the residence of the powerful Gonzagas family
that ruled the region for over 300 years.
Here you will see magnificent murals by Andrea Mantegna and Titian. We continue on to Venice for overnight.
Day 8. Sunday, June 6, 2004����������.���..Venice
Today is free to explore the
city of Venice, �Queen of the Adriatic�.
There is also city sightseeing with a local guide included.
Day 9. Monday, June 7, 2004..�������������Venice
We enjoy a boat trip to Borano
Island where we see the hand production of needlepoint lace.
Day 10. Tuesday, June 8, 2004�������������Venice
Today we visit the design
studio and weaving mill of RUBELLI silk weavers. We also are allowed into their important archives of Renaissance
and Baroque silk fabrics.
Day 11. Wednesday, June 9, 2004�����������..Venice
We visit the Guggenheim
Collection and resident artists studios.
In the evening we enjoy dinner together.
Day 12. Thursday,
June 10, 2004�����������.
Depart Venice for
Florence to conclude the tour.
Check in to
apartments arranged with Santa Reparata School and get ready for the studio course.
Following the
conclusion of the tour, Studio Courses begin in Florence under separate
arrangements with Santa Reparata School (UOA): June 10- June 29, 2004. (Separate registration is required.)
The accredited
studio courses taught by the tour leaders are arranged through Georgia State
University Office of Study Abroad Program in collaboration with Santa Reparata
International School in Florence.
Participants of the studio
course must enroll separately for the courses through the Study Abroad program
of Georgia State University

STUDIO COURSE OUTLINE:
Text 4000 undergraduate major

Summer Study Abroad Program in
Italy in textile design, styling, and manufacturing. The program aims to create an inter-disciplinary approach between
Textile Design and Interior Design, at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Through lectures, demonstrations,
and intensive studio work, students will come to understand the entire process
of designing, styling, and manufacturing sophisticated textiles for
industry. This course will build on
knowledge and inspiration gained through field research conducted during the
proceeding tour as well as the field trips to museums and important sites in
and out of Florence. There is ample
time for sketch dvelopment. Students
may register for either or both the tour and studio course.
June 10
Move into apartments well
equipped with kitchen and linens.
June 11
Orientation at Santa
ReparataSchool. Afternoon walking tour
of art supply shop.
June 12-20
Through studio classes and
field trips in and around Florence students will collect inspiration and create
sketches with which to develop repeat designs/ story board / printing small
scale
June 21
Critique.
June 22-26
Repeat design development /
color separation / screen production / and fabric printing. This advanced studio work will take place at
the Fuji Studio, which is well equipped for printing yardage.

Final Critique

FACULTY:
Junco Sato Pollack, Associate
Professor of Art, Head of the Textiles Program at the School of Art and Design of
Georgia State University. Professor
Pollack has exhibited her textile artwork internationally in Museums and
galleries in major cities around the world.
Her work is included in the permanent Collection of Museum of Art and
Design.
Trained in silk manufacturing,
weaving, and surface design in Japan and United States, her involvement in
textile study is broad and varied.
Prof. Pollack�s current research involves thermo-plastic nature of micro
fiber polyester and printing on metallic and silk textiles, texturing and
laminating into three-dimensional fabric sculpture.
Susan Webb-Rebecchi, Owner /
designer of Susan Webb Design Inc, a Textile Design Studio based in New York
City. Mrs. Webb-Rebecchi is a winner of
prestigious Roscoe Award awarded each year for the fine home-furnishing textile
design. She has operated her design
business over 15 years after working for Brunschwig & Fils, established a
partnership with Grey Watkins, and now licenses her print design
internationally, overseeing the engraving and printing of goods manufactured in
France, Switzerland and Italy. Mrs.
Webb-Rebecchi has a working relationship with the Textile manufacturers on this
tour.
The two program co-directors
have shared many travels in Europe and in Japan since 1984. Most recently they organized and directed
successfully SDA European Textile Study Tour in 1999.

The Santa Reparata
International School where the studio course will be offered is a
well-established International School with excellent studio facility located in
the center of the Renaissance city of Florence. The School offers variety of courses throughout the year and

APPLICATION DETAILS:
All participants
must be accepted into the Study Abroad Program through a portfolio review.
Submit: application form, $100 fee, transcript, a
letter of recommendation, portfolio of 10 works and list, and a statement of
reasons wishing to study textile design in Italy.
Non-GSU students
must supply a letter of permission to study at GSU and statement of residency status
from their department or registrar and pay $250 non-resident fee upon
acceptance into the program.

Make r/t air to Milan arriving May 31 where the tour originates.
The tour ends in Florence at noon on June 10. Make own travel arrangement to Milan and bus
to the Milan airport on June 10, 2004.
Or plan to stay one night in Florence.
For those signing up for the studio course only:
Make r/t air to Milan and train to Florence arriving June 10,
departing June 30, 2004.
For those signing up for both tour and studio course:
Make r/t air to Milan arriving on May 31 and returning June 30.
